Are you looking for a spa retreat with all the amenities without the costly expense? Then all you need is your own backyard patio. Although you may typically use your patio as a place for entertaining guests and cooking outdoors, see the ways to create a spa-like feel and atmosphere in the privacy of your own backyard.
I generally use my patio for entertaining, but for a spa treatment, that’s special. With simple additions from around the house and purchased from the local garden center you can turn your patio into a day spa where your special guests can enjoy themselves.
Creating a spa-like atmosphere
To create your very own a tranquil spa retreat, look for ways to appeal to the three basic senses – sight, sound and feel – to help you get in the spa zone. Incorporate plants and accessories that offer appealing colors, textures. Then add touches of smell with fragrances. My favorites include a variety of Hawaiian Plumeria, Hibiscus, citrus trees and of course Sago Palms.
So let’s get started by using your existing patio furniture with large, comfortable pillows that invite spa-goers to sit and rest. Make it fun, use different colors, sizes and textures. You can find a variety of pillows designed for indoor and outdoor use, many of the new weatherproof fabrics are durable and attractive.
Outdoor pillows can be expensive, so if you’re looking for an inexpensive alternate way to dress things up just use beach towels as a covering, you can adjust them to fit an existing pillow accordingly, and when you’re finished, take them back inside to wash in the laundry. The best spas are super clean so beach towels that gets placed into the washing machine after a busy backyard spa day makes good sense.
Add the sound of tranquil water, a home spa just wouldn’t be a spa without it. You can buy small tabletop fountains practically anywhere. Float flowers from your garden in the water or brightly colored rocks or marbles to the water basin to add a personal touch to your water feature.
Get creative with potted plantings. Plants have a soothing powers that are not only important but a vital ingredient to completing your backyard spa oasis. Use plants with visual, palate-pleasing scents and textures. Herbs such as rosemary and lavender not only smell and look great but can also be used in your homemade herbal spa treatments. Incorporate your favorite plants in shades you like such as reds, pastels, purples, whites and silvers to create an assortment soothing colors.
Accessorize with scented candles, an outdoor rug, hand towels, bottled water and other objects. Use soft mood music in the background. Compliment it all with a standalone umbrella to protect spa-goers from the sun or set an oscillating fan in one corner to provide a nice cool breeze on hot days.
Patios are intended to be calm relaxing sanctuaries that make you feel better, help you entertain, enjoy and recharge yourself for tomorrow or the week ahead.
